Master Elect's Message and Installation Dinner

Sent to All Members

I consider it a great honour to have been elected as the next Master of our Company and look forward to my forthcoming year with a real mix of apprehension and excitement. It has become the custom for newly installed Masters to unveil their plans at the Installation Dinner and I look forward to the opportunity to do the same.

However the Master and I have agreed that a key aspect of these plans will be to increase Member involvement in the Company’s activities and it strikes us that there is no better place to start than to encourage you to come to the Installation Dinner on 18th October. Full details [have already been] circulated by the Clerk but suffice for me to say that Vintners’ Hall is a magnificent venue, that we have selected what should prove to be an enjoyable menu and that the Wines Committee have chosen some wonderful wines for the evening.

Most importantly we have as our principal guest and speaker, David Andrews the founder and CEO of Xchanging PLC. I am confident that he will share some interesting insights with us, not least his comparative experiences of running a management consultancy practice and then building and leading what is now a FTSE 250 company.

The full programme of events for the year ahead will be published shortly but I’d also like to take this opportunity to ask that you also put the Change Lecture in your diary. It will be delivered in Salters' Hall on 21st November by Martyn Lewis CBE whom many will recall from his days as a leading television news presenter. He is now the driving force behind a successful communications business and will, I am certain, have some interesting things to say about the changing world of communications.

I look forward to many opportunities to meet Members and their guests during the year ahead.

With kind regards to all,

William Barnard - Master Elect

Roger Cadman

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the news of Roger Cadman’s death on Monday, 24th September. He was 67 years of age. Roger had been ill for many months and had been making a gallant recovery from a serious operation in April until he suffered a relapse in July.

The funeral will take place at St Anne’s Church, Kew Green, at 2.00PM on Wednesday 3rd October. (Kew Green is on the south bank of the Thames near Kew Bridge, giving onto the main gates of Kew Gardens.) I know that Roger’s widow Diana has derived great support from the thoughts and messages of members of the Company over the last few difficult months, and that she and the family will appreciate the presence of friends at the funeral service.

As I will be away at this time, please address any queries to our Honorary Almoner, Adrian Williams - corvus@tinyworld.co.uk

Dennis Hall - Clerk to the Company

FOUNDATION FOR PEACE

Some 10 years ago the IRA exploded a bomb in the town centre of Warrington on a Saturday morning. There were 56 people injured, some of them seriously and two children killed. The father of one of them, Colin Parry is a long-term friend and colleague of Liveryman Paul Mawdsley.

As a consequence of his sons death Colin Parry has established the Peace Centre in Warrington. It is a wonderful facility; they cater for children and youths who have been traumatised by civil strife. Originally, this was mainly children from Ireland but has now expanded its facilities to embrace places such a Bosnia, Serbia and Iraq.

Paul Mawdsley writes:

"I am contacting you to ask for your help.

On October 31, a major London based company has offered to host an evening event on behalf of the Foundation at their offices in Canary Wharf.
The event will comprise Gerry Adams [Sinn Fein] and Colin Parry addressing an invited audience of approx 50 guests on the theme: ‘Different Roads to Peace’.

The event is designed to raise their profile and provide them with introductions to potential new supporters, who will more than likely know little if anything of the foundation’s existence, let alone its work.

I think people will realise that Gerry Adams and Colin Parry sharing the same platform is a magnificent step forward.

As you can appreciate, reaching people with the right kind of connections is vital, especially in terms of working in and around the capital.

I wanted to ask if you would participate and suggest names that you think would be interested in such a unique event of this kind and if you would be so kind as to let me know their contact details".

For more information view their website www.foundation4peace.org

Thank you and best wishes.

Round the Island Yacht Race and competing in the Suhaili Round the Island Challenge Trophy
-
Weekend of 22-24 June 2007

The world’s largest and most famous yachting race, the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, took place on the 23rd June 2007 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. In all, 1753 boats competed over the 50-mile course around the Isle of Wight in a race that saw some of the biggest names in the sailing world. Those who had been on the previous 2 events thought this was the best sail yet. We had decent winds for most of the race and although showers always threatened we were all pretty lucky to remain dry apart from one or two of our fleet who were caught in a violent squall towards the end of the race. Soaked but undefeated we all completed the course in the best times yet and had a cracking sail.

This year was better than ever.

• We had larger yachts – 68ft Clippers, from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Clipper Ventures fleet, made available for the first time in this event.

• The Clipper 68’s were racing in their own class in the race, which was the One Design class with the biggest yachts.

• The weather was good for a cracking sail! Have a look at some of the Pictures.

The yachts were as usual, from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Clipper Ventures fleet, crewed and helmed by members of The Little Ship Club (LSC) and The Worshipful Company of Management Consultants.

The Suhaili Challenge was contested by just 2 boats this year (rather like the America's Cup!!) and won very well by Western Australia with Keith Graham (LSC) and Martin Down representing the Company. The runner up was Victoria Clipper who had Ed Sankey and Mark Churchward on board representing the Company. Well done to Western Australia's company !

The Company were joined by the Sea Cadets at The Lord Major's Show.

This year Sea Cadets from numerous London Units were joined on their float by members of The Worshipful Company of Management Consultants, one of the City's newest livery companies, which generously sponsored this year's float as part of its ongoing support for Sea Cadets in the London Area. A band comprising Cadets from Southern Area also came together especially for the Show. [Extract from The Marine Society & Sea Cadets newsletter, November 2006]
