Edward Brech's Biography of Lt. Co. Urwick As many Members know Edward Brech completed his biography of Lt. Col. Urwick in 2005, but no agreement had been reached with a publisher before his death. As Edward gave the copyright to the Company, the Education Committee initially proposed that it should be put on the Company’s internet site. However, following recent developments there now appears a possibility that Oxford University Press (OUP) may publish the biography if it is suitably edited and placed in a wider context. Professors Andrew Thomson (former dean of the Open University Business School and one of Edward’s examiners for his PhD) and John Wilson (Co-editor of ‘Business History’ and Director of Research at University of Central Lancashire) made the approach to OUP on behalf of Edward. Both individuals are members of the Management History Research Group, which Edward was instrumental in forming to encourage the study of management history in business schools and the preservation of related historical archives for future research purposes. Last year John and Andrew published ‘The Making of Modern Management: British Management in Historical Perspective’, and dedicated the book to Edward “in recognition of the inspirational role he has played in fostering the development of management history in the UK”. Both have agreed
to undertake the editing of the manuscript and to submit a formal proposal
to the publisher. Edward’s family has welcomed this opportunity
for the publication of his last impressive work. LESLIE ZURICK.It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Leslie Zurick on Saturday, 16 December 2006. The Master and Wardens send the deepest sympathy of the Company to Marion, his wife, and to his family. Leslie had been a member of the Company since its earliest days, playing an active and greatly appreciated rôle as a member of the Court and of the Charities Committee. Because of his considerate nature and gentle demeanour, his remarkable intelligence could be less apparent. His grace, charm and obliging manner will be profoundly missed. Leslie
had been battling illness with remarkable fortitude for some time. Marion
has asked not to be contacted by telephone for the moment but those who
knew Leslie well might like to write to her at this address: Once the arrangements for Leslie’s funeral and his family's wishes are known, I will publish more details. Dennis Hall Clerk
