2006 ELECTIONS TO THE COURT OF ASSISTANTS

There are two vacancies to serve on the Court of Assistants this year. Liverymen have been invited to stand as a candidate for one of these posts. Only Liverymen are also able to vote for candidates.

The following 3 nominations have been received (listed in alphabetical order) for election to the Court, so there is a contest that relies on all Liverymen voting. To Vote please email the Clerk of the Court between Sunday 10th September from Noon onwards to Tuesday 19th September Noon, when the ballot closes. The results of the ballot will be announced at the Court Meeting on the 21st September.

To download the Election Address please click on the candidate's name above. To view these files you will need an Adobe PDF reader.

Eligibility: Liverymen of the Company of good standing are eligible. The Ordinances of the Company provide that Assistants may be asked upon admission to make and sign such declarations as shall from time to time be prescribed and to satisfy the Court that they are prepared to serve the office of Warden and Master in due course. Each candidate must have one Proposer and two to five Seconders. They must be notified to the Clerk before Noon on Friday, 8 September.

Proposers: Proposers must be Liverymen and may only propose one candidate. They may in addition be a Seconder for one other candidate this year. Proposers will be deemed to have cast a vote for the candidate they propose.

Election Address: Each candidate is invited to send to the Clerk a single page Election Address outlining themselves and setting out a statement of intent. It would be helpful to include a small photograph of the candidate. The address needs to reach the Clerk by Noon on Friday, 8 September; they will then be posted on the website.

Company wine tasting evening 19th July 2006

Would you buy a wine called Dog Point? I am not sure that I would - but after the Wine Tasting …

Lance Jefferson, Director of Marketing for Berry Bros & Rudd, the Company’s host for the wine tasting evening on 19 July 2006

As we climbed down into the cool of Berry’s Pickering Cellar, leaving the humid heat of St James’ Street, we caught a glimpse of the racks of encrusted bottles holding quietly maturing wines. That was the last crusty thing we saw until the Clerk rounded up the stragglers at the end of the evening…… more

Charity Awards 2006 - 15th June at the Battersea Arena

Charity Awards 2006

The Charity Awards and Dinner was held at Battersea Arena on 15th June. Organised by Charity Finance the Awards are the UK’s premier annual celebration of achievement by the voluntary sector and attract near to 1000 attendees from charities large and small.

This year’s event was very professionally run and very enjoyable. The judges awarded The Management Consultants Company Prize for Charity Effectiveness to London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund, the Charity founded as an immediate response to 7/7 and which started awarding grants within ten days. Gill Hicks, a survivor of the attack, sat with Company members and guests at our table and, at the presentation, praised the winners, to big applause. Edward Hoare and Bill Whitehead of the International Bankers Company were our guests and Company attendees were The Master, third warden William Barnard, Shelagh Rushforth , Julia Lever, John McLean Fox, Bernard Eccles and Gareth Rees.

This is the second year that the Company has sponsored the prize and I have no doubt that we are becoming increasingly recognised in the sector as a benefactor.

The Royalist Regatta May 2006

Brainstrust - 4 April 2006 at Cass Business School

Corporate Governance: Adding Shareholder Value

This workshop developed from the Corporate Governance Community of Practice. A new approach was tried with this Brainstrust as two presenters were used. Sir Brian Pitman, well-known for his sterling work at Lloyds Bank and then Lloyds TSB, and now an Advisor to Morgan Stanley, and Bob Garratt, known for his long-term focus on corporate governance, and board development and evaluation, presented their ideas and experiences before opening up a lively discussion.

Sir Brian focused on defining the issue of adding shareholder value - "the economic value added after taking into account the reasonable short-term demands of the owners, the cost of capital, and ensuring the long-term viability of the business". He illustrated this with many examples, national and international, of boards failing to be able to juggle all three simultaneously. Bob took up this them and, using the Learning Board process, outlined a way of structuring director's strategic thinking, risk-assessment and decision-making into a process of continuous learning. The dinner which followed was a very cheery affair!

Details of the slides used can be found on the WCoMC website under "Brainstrusts".
