| Charity Golf Day, 16th May 2005 Due to some last minute work pressures that are the bane of all consultants’ lives, our numbers were depleted to just 12 liverymen and one guest this year for the Annual Charity Golf Day. Like last year the day was held at the Bowood Golf Club in deepest Wiltshire, a beautiful course wonderfully laid out on the Bowood estate. The weather was again set fair with a gentle wind blowing from the south to keep the temperature in the mid 20’s, perfect for low scoring golf. The only snag now was the ability of the players. Unfortunately this was not up to the standard of the course or the weather!! There were some 6 competitions apart from the longest drive, nearest the pin, individual and team prizes; there was also the oddly named “Masters Ball” competition. This involved each team taking it in turns to hit the “Master’s Ball” accumulating the points for that hole. The team with the highest total (before they lost their ball) would win the prize. It is also worthy of note that any player hitting a shot into the abundant water would be fined an additional £5 for the cause. I am pleased to say that my own team won the Master’s Ball competition, only slightly dampened (if you will pardon the pun) by me driving it into the pond on the last hole!! I suppose I should have realised that this would happen having earlier captured the longest drive competition. The overall individual prize was won by Peter Osborne of French Thornton whom I hope we will be seeing more of in the Company. He beat the nearest competitor by an excellent 3 points and was a worthy champion. The remainder of the prizes were shared equally amongst the other participants although I should probably take the opportunity to point out that Founding Liveryman Jeremy Drew did not (much to his surprise) win the booby prize, that honour this year went to Founding Liveryman Paul Thornton, who I would like to thank for helping me organise this years event. The evening was rounded off with a superb 3-course dinner which would not have disgraced even the Master’s table. As to next year’s event I have decided to take soundings on the location, it may be that holding it so far from London may have diminished the numbers and I am actively exploring other alternatives closer to the City. The downside to this is the cost. This year we were able to hold the cost of the day (less fines) to £75. Due to some excellent accounting practices that I would rather keep between Enron Inc and myself, and due to a generous donation from QA (who’s Chairman is Past Master Burgess) we raised a little over £550 which for such a small turnout I found rather gratifying. If anyone has ideas or suggestions for next years event then please do not hesitate to contact me. Paul Northcott The Charities Supper, Salters’ Hall on 19th January 2005 Nearly 100 people attended the very popular Charities Supper at the Salters’ Hall on 19th January 2005, including leaders of a number of charities, some of whom are receiving pro bono mentoring and consultancy support, together with some notable grant makers. In a very convivial evening we were treated to three moving and inspiring talks by our three guest speakers. They provided salutary reminders of the plight of many, and the wonderful work being done to support them. The talks also illustrated how modest support from our Members often has huge leverage and is very much valued by the charities receiving it. Our thanks go to Towers Perrin for their generous and continuing corporate sponsorship of the event.
The Installation Dinner, 21st October 2004 In the lavish surroundings of Vintners' Hall, Mr Allan Duguid was installed as the 11th Master of the Company. Over 120 Members and their guests enjoyed music provided by the Sea Cadets and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, good wines, a tasty Dinner and an entertaining speech by guest of honour, Major General Martin White, CB, CBE, DL.
