The late Honorary Assistant Hedley Thomas

It is my sad task to inform you of the passing of Hedley on Friday 3rd January at his home in Bray.

Hedley contributed much to the profession of management consulting in his life--a contribution which he continued through the CoMC Education Committee by making possible the merging of the Urwick Foundation and the Charitable Trust of the Company through the creation of the Urwick Prize and Cup.

He had been battling with cancer for many years but bravely gave a sterling address at last year's 2002 Education Supper,
then travelled to Australia for the ICMCI Congress, again to India to watch cricket and got out of bed after twelve weeks to attend this year's Education Supper in June 2003. It was one of his last public appearances.

He was truly one of the founding fathers of Management Consulting in this country and was a co-founder of ICMCI for which he was awarded OBE by Her Majesty.

He will be sorely missed but his contribution will live on.

Chair, Education Committee

The Tenth Anniversary Celebration Luncheon

On Wednesday 6th November at Mansion House, The Company held the first occasion in its history in the presence of a serving Lord Mayor. During his last week of office the then Lord Mayor, Alderman Michael Oliver with his Lady Mayoress joined us at The Tenth Annivesary Celebration Luncheon to celebrate the ten years that have passed since we started as a Guild.

It was a splendid occasion with some 200 Freemen and their guests sitting down to lunch in the glittering Egyptian Hall at Mansion House, the Lord Mayor's residence in the City.

I was able to say a few words about our achievements as a Guild and Company over the last ten years and First Warden Alan Broomhead spoke glowingly about our guests. The Rt. Hon. Lord Currie of Marylebone also gave us insights into his new role at OFCOM as well giving a huge plug for the City Centre for Charity Effectiveness, our joint venture with him at the Cass Business School.

The then Lord Mayor replied and thanked us for presenting him with books that he had taken on a recent visit to South Africa and donated to CIDA, an urban university in Johannesburg and the then Lady Mayoress presented me with a gift of a PC mouse!

The Luncheon also marked a celebration on our progress towards Livery and much excitement was expressed about this and about the City Centre for Charity Effectiveness and since these, and our birthday, were the main aims of holding the Luncheon I think we should mark it down as a milestone in our Company's history.

So once again in fun, friendship and for the future, thank you all for your support.

Patrick McHugh,
Master

The Installation Dinner, 17th October 2092

A Message from the Master:

Thank you for coming to my Installation Dinner. Personally, I had a terrific evening and the atmosphere was full of fun and vitality. I was especially pleased to invite Dr. Jo Gipps and his wife, Professor Carolyn Gipps as our Principle Guests and to welcome the other guests of the Company. It was also terrific to see the level of friendship such an evening affords. The event served to convince me yet further of the benefits of mutual support that membership of the Company brings.

At the Installation Ceremony which preceded the Dinner I expressed my and the Court’s heartfelt thanks for the service and contribution that Immediate Past Master Mike Jeans gave to the Company during his year of office and heralded my year by outlining “The Three F’s”, Fun, Friendship and Financial security!

I am most aware of the difficult times in which we are operating and it is in such times that we must hold fast to the Company and the oath that we took as Freemen. This means practically that we should all give something back to the society in which we have grown professionally through pro bono consulting work. We should provide a support network for each other and, in our pursuit of Livery, build a future for subsequent generations.

Patrick McHugh
Master

The Annual Company Debate, 19th September 2002

Company Members and their guests gathered at Watermen’s Hall for this year’s debate. The motion, the wording of which was subject to some variation, was that “This House Does Not Believe that Outsourcing is True Consulting”. The debate was ably chaired by the Master, who started proceedings by taking a vote on the motion. The motion was supported by 26 votes to 11.

A full account of the debate can be found in the Events section of the Members only Library (in read-only format).

After much deliberation and persuasive arguments plus a good deal of input from the floor, the Master resubmitted the motion for a vote at the end of the evening. This time the results were 21 in favour of the motion and 16 against the motion. By virtue of the swing against the motion, the opposers were declared the victors. The Master thanked everyone for their contribution and the evening was adjourned for refreshments.

For and Against!

The Education Supper & Awards Presentation, 27th June 2002

Sir Alan Urwick, KCVO, CMG presents this year's Urwick Cup & prize to Linda Sutherland at Tallow Chandlers' Hall

Our thanks go to Assistant Barry Curnow and his Committeee for making the Education Supper such a success. Another record
turnout for this event and again a great atmosphere celebrating all our involvement with education. Tallow Chandlers' Hall was ideal on a summer's evening with drinks in the Courtyard.

Seven of our thirty mentees came as Members' guests and had an opportunity to learn more about the Company as did our other
guests the Masters & Clerks of the Company of Tax Advisers and Guild of Educators. The Urwick Cup was presented by Sir Alan Urwick and it was good to see Hedley Thomas there since he had been the prime mover in bringing the Cup to the Company.

So now we can all take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the Summer holidays. I wish you all and your families a very happy holiday period - but don't forget the Company Debate on 19th September at Watermen's Hall; this is historically a fun and sociable evening. Let's make sure there's a big participative audience!

Mike Jeans,
Master

The Master's Dinner, 18th April 2002, Painters' Hall

Dear Fellow Member,

The Master's Dinner certainly fulfilled my "community and fun" aims; it also had a real family feel with guests including fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. The real surprise for me was Baroness Noakes; I've heard her speak many times but never so humorously! I was also delighted that we had so much time at the end to mingle over a stirrup cup - or two, or three … !

For those who couldn't attend, a particular high spot was the announcement that our fundraising effort was closed at the fantastic total of £70,000. This means that the requirement for full Livery status of £300,000 in our Charitable Fund is now well within reach. Many thanks to all of you who have contributed and to Founder Master Miller and his Fundraising Committee for all their work. We are well on our way to becoming 'worshipful' - even worshipped, surely a lifelong ambition of any management consultant!
